Powertrain Verification Test VER-5 (JTEC)

NOTE: If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, the correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be programmed into the PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from being stored in Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) and Air Bag Control Module (ACM). If replacing PCM and vehicle is equipped with a Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), secret key data must also be updated to enable engine starting.
  1. Inspect the vehicle to ensure that all engine components are properly installed and connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary.
  2. If any existing DTCs have not been repaired, perform appropriate DTC test and finish diagnosing remaining DTCs as necessary. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DAKOTA or SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DURANGO - JTEC article.
  3. Connect the DRB-III(R) to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
  4. Ensure the Fuel Tank is at least 1/4 full. Turn off all accessories.
  5. If the PCM was not replaced, go to step  9 . If PCM was replaced, go to next step.
  6. If the PCM was replaced, the correct Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and mileage must be programmed or a DTC will set in the Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) and Air Bag Control Module (ACM). See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. In addition, if the vehicle is equipped with Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), secret key data must be updated to enable start. See UPDATING SECRET KEY DATA  under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING.
  7. For ABS and air bag systems, enter correct VIN and mileage in PCM. Erase DTCs in CAB and ACM.
  8. For SKIM theft alarm, connect DRB-III(R) to DLC. Using DRB-III(R), select THEFT ALARM, SKIM, MISCELLANEOUS, and place SKIM in SECURED ACCESS mode by using the appropriate Personal Identification Number (PIN) code for this vehicle. This number may be obtained from the vehicle's owner or manufacturer. Select UPDATE THE SECRET KEY DATA. Data will be transferred from SKIM to PCM.
  9. If the Catalytic Converter was replaced, with the DRB-III(R), go to the MISCELLANEOUS MENU option, CATALYST REPLACED and press ENTER.
  10. If a comprehensive component DTC was repaired, perform steps  1113 . If a major OBD-II monitor DTC was repaired, go to step  14 .
  11. Turn the ignition off and wait at least 10 seconds. Restart the vehicle and run 2 minutes.
  12. With the DRB-III(R), monitor the appropriate OBD-II PRETEST ENABLING CONDITIONS screen until all conditions have been met. Once the conditions have been met, switch screen to the appropriate OBD-II monitor. Operate vehicle within all enabling conditions and allow applicable OBD-II monitor to run. While OBD-II monitor is running, scan tool will beep.
  13. If the DTC conditions cannot be duplicated, erase all DTCs with the DRB-III(R).
  14. If any other DTC has set, perform appropriate test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DAKOTA or SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DURANGO - JTEC article. After OBD-II monitor is complete, view the results. Does the OBD-II monitor run successfully and has the GOOD TRIP counter changed to one or more? If yes, repair is complete. If no, check for any related Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) and/or perform appropriate DTC test and finish diagnosing remaining DTCs as necessary. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DAKOTA or SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DURANGO - JTEC article. If no, repair is complete.
