Fuel System Pressure Release
WARNING:
ALWAYS release fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components.
NOTE:
For component location, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS
. For connector identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION
. For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS
article. After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components.
- Remove Fuel Tank Cap. Remove Fuel Pump Relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). Start engine and allow engine to idle until engine stalls. Attempt to start engine until it will no longer run. Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect harness connector at any Fuel Injector. Connect jumper wire between positive battery terminal and Automatic Shutdown (ASD) Relay output circuit at Fuel Injector harness connector.
- Momentarily connect jumper wire between negative battery terminal and remaining Fuel Injector harness terminal for a few seconds. This operates Fuel Injector and releases fuel pressure.
- Remove jumper wires. Install harness connector on Fuel Injector. Fuel pressure should now be released. Reinstall Fuel Pump Relay. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may have been stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) due to the removal of Fuel Pump Relay. Using DRB-III(R), clear DTCs.
CAUTION:
Ensure previous step is performed to release high fuel pressure in the Fuel Rail before proceeding. DO NOT attempt to use the following steps to release fuel pressure unless previous step has been performed, as excessive fuel will be released into the cylinder.
CAUTION:
DO NOT apply voltage to Fuel Injector for extended time or Fuel Injector may be damaged.
