A/C Control EBL Switch Failure (Manual A/C)

NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
NOTE: The rear window defogger is also known as EBL (Electric Back Light).

Monitored & Set Condition

  1. When Monitored: With the ignition on.
  2. Set Condition: The BCM detects the EBL switch stuck in the depressed position for at least 30 seconds.

Possible Causes:

Testing

  1. Put the control switch in the Recirc/Bi-Level (full left) position. With the scan tool, erase BODY COMPUTER DTC's. With the scan tool, read the mode switch MUX voltage. If the voltage is .5 volt or less, go to next step. If the voltage is .5 volt or more, go to step  6 .
  2. Disconnect the manual temp control head C1 harness connector. See Figure . With the scan tool, read the mode switch MUX voltage. If the scan tool displays, MODE SWITCH MUX, 4.8 volts or more, replace the control head. See MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS - CONCORDE & INTREPID article in HVAC. If no, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition OFF. Disconnect BCM C2 harness connector. See Figure . Measure the resistance between ground and the mode switch MUX circuit. If the resistance is 100 ohms or less, repair the mode switch MUX circuit for a short to ground. If the resistance is 100 ohms or more, go to next step.
  4. Measure the resistance between the sensor ground circuit and the mode switch MUX circuit in the manual temp control head C1 connector. See Figure . If the resistance is 100 ohms or less, repair the mode switch MUX circuit for a short to the sensor ground circuit. If the resistance is 100 ohms or more, go to next step.
  5. If there are no possible causes remaining, replace the BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Press and release the rear defogger and the A/C select buttons on the control head several times. If either of the buttons seem to stick at times, replace the control head. See MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS - CONCORDE & INTREPID article in HVAC. If both buttons do not stick, go to next step.
  7. Put the control switch in the Recirc/Bi-Level (full left) position. Ensure the A/C and the rear defogger switches are off. Turn ignition on. With the scan tool, read the mode switch MUX voltage. If the voltage is between 4.2-4.5 volts, go to next step. If the voltage is not between 4.2-4.5 volts, replace the control head. See MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS - CONCORDE & INTREPID article in HVAC.
  8. With the scan tool, read the mode switch MUX voltage. Press and hold the A/C button and observe the scan tool voltage. The voltage should be approximately .45 volt. Press and hold the rear defogger button and observe the scan tool voltage. The voltage should be approximately .25 volt. If the voltage readings were correct when buttons were pressed, there is no problem with the control head switches. If voltage was not correct, replace the control head. See MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS - CONCORDE & INTREPID article in HVAC.
