WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Durango and 2002 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, the correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be programmed into the PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from being stored in Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) and Air Bag Control Module (ACM). If replacing PCM and vehicle is equipped with a Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), secret key data must also be updated to enable engine starting.
  1. Inspect vehicle to ensure all engine components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary.
  2. Inspect the engine oil for contamination. If oil contamination is suspected, change the oil and filter.
  3. If the PCM has not been replaced, go to step  7 . If PCM has been replaced, go to next step.
  4. If replacement PCM has not been programmed, go to next step. If replacement PCM has already been programmed and vehicle is equipped with SKIM, go to step  6 . If replacement PCM has already been programmed and vehicle is not equipped with SKIM, go to step  7 .
  5. Program PCM and clear DTCs. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. If vehicle is equipped with SKIM, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with SKIM, go to step  7 .
  6. Update secret key data into SKIM. See UPDATING SECRET KEY DATA  under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After updating secret key data, go to next step.
  7. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and stays running, test is complete. If engine does not start, or starts and stalls, check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) and/or go to NO-START DIAGNOSIS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - DAKOTA & DURANGO article for additional testing.
