Powertrain Verification Test VER-2 (JTEC)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Durango and 2002 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, the correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be programmed into the PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from being stored in Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) and Air Bag Control Module (ACM). If replacing PCM and vehicle is equipped with a Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), secret key data must also be updated to enable engine starting.
  1. Inspect the vehicle to ensure that all engine components are properly installed and connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary.
  2. If this verification procedure is being performed after a DTC repair, go to step  5 . If this verification procedure is not being performed after a DTC repair, perform steps  3 and  4 .
  3. Check to see if the initial symptom still exists. If the symptom no longer exists, the repair is successful and testing is complete.
  4. If the initial or another DTC or symptom remains, check for any related Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) and/or perform appropriate DTC test and finish diagnosing remaining DTCs as necessary. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DAKOTA or SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DURANGO - JTEC article. If no, repair is complete.
  5. If this verification procedure is being performed after a DTC repair, perform steps  615 .
  6. Connect the DRB-III(R) to the Data Link Connector (DLC). With the DRB-III(R), erase DTCs and reset all values.
  7. If the PCM was not replaced, go to step  11 . If PCM was replaced, go to next step.
  8. If the PCM was replaced, the correct Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and mileage must be programmed or a DTC will set in the Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) and Air Bag Control Module (ACM). See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. In addition, if the vehicle is equipped with Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), secret key data must be updated to enable start. See UPDATING SECRET KEY DATA  under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING.
  9. For ABS and air bag systems, enter correct VIN and mileage in PCM. Erase DTCs in CAB and ACM.
  10. For SKIM theft alarm, connect DRB-III(R) to DLC. Using DRB-III(R), select THEFT ALARM, SKIM, MISCELLANEOUS and place SKIM in SECURED ACCESS mode by using the appropriate Personal Identification Number (PIN) code for this vehicle. This number may be obtained from the vehicle's owner or manufacturer. Select UPDATE THE SECRET KEY DATA. Data will be transferred from SKIM to PCM.
  11. If equipped with a Transfer Case Position (TCP) Switch, perform step  12 . If not equipped with TCP Switch, go to step  13 .
  12. Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. Place the Transfer Case shift lever in each gear position, stopping for 15 seconds in each position. Go to next step.
  13. Road test the vehicle. If the test is for an Air Conditioning (A/C) DTC, ensure A/C is operating during the next step.
  14. Drive the vehicle for at least 5 minutes at 40 MPH. Ensure the Transmission shifts properly through all gears. At some point, stop the vehicle and turn off the engine for at least 10 seconds.
  15. With the DRB-III(R), read DTCs. If any DTCs or symptoms remain, check for any related Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) and/or perform appropriate DTC test and finish diagnosing remaining DTCs as necessary. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DAKOTA or SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DURANGO - JTEC article. If no DTCs or symptoms remain, repair is complete.
