Transmission Control Module (TCM) Adaptation - Nag1
This procedure requires the use of the scan tool. The scan tool routines allow the transmission control system to enter a shift adaptation relearn mode. The TCM Adaptation Procedure must be completed if any of the following repairs have been performed:
- Transmission Assembly Replacement
- Transmission Control Module Replacement
- Clutch Plate and/or Seal Replacement
- Electrohydraulic Unit (Valve Body) Replacement or Recondition
The TCM will store the adaptation values every 10 minutes. When the adaptation procedure is complete, do not turn off the ignition. Make sure the vehicle stays running for at least 10 minutes.
It is possible to manually store the adaptation values in less than 10 minutes by using the scan tool to initiate the Store Learned Adaptives routine, if available.
TCM ADAPTATION PROCEDURE
- With the scan tool, initiate the Reset Learned Adaptives routine. This will set the adaptations to the factory default settings.NOTE:
Perform the Coast Down Adaptations first. The Transmission Temperature must be greater than 60°C (140°F) and less than 70°C (158°F). Failure to stay within this temperature range will void the procedure.
- Drive the vehicle until the transmission temperature is within the specified range.
- For Coast Down Adaptations:
Allow the transmission to automatically down-shift from 5th to 4th gear and then from 4th to 3rd gear while coasting (APP 0%). Do this five times for each down-shift.NOTE:
For all Upshift adaptations, the Transmission Temperature must be greater than 60°C (140°F) and less than 100°C (212°F). Failure to stay within these temperature ranges will void this procedure.
NOTE:Perform the following procedures on a road with less traffic and a slight downhill grade. This will help facilitate the target engine speeds, gear ranges, and accelerator pedal positions necessary to complete this procedure.
NOTE:It might be difficult to obtain 5th gear at 1, 800 RPM. In this case, allow the transmission to shift into 5th gear at a higher RPM and then lower the RPM to 1, 800.
- For Clutch Filling and Pressure Adaptations: From a stop, lightly accelerate the vehicle holding a steady throttle (APP between 3% and 8%) and keeping the engine speed below 1, 800 RPM prior to shifting to obtain ALL forward gear ranges. REPEAT THIS 10 TIMES.
- For Shift Time Adaptations: From a full stop, apply a constant 5% APP position while allowing the transmission to shift into the highest gear possible and then stop the vehicle. Perform this five times. Repeat these same steps at 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 50%, and 100% APP. Be sure to keep a constant throttle angle and repeat each acceleration procedure FIVE TIMES FOR EACH THROTTLE ANGLE VALUE.
- For Torque Converter Clutch Adaptation: While in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear (no shifting) and using a scan tool, verify that the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) is in Slip Mode operation. Then hold vehicle speed constant using different APP angles (10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%) for several minutes. If possible, use scan tool to verify TCC Actual Slip is within 20 RPM of TCC Desired Slip for each throttle position.
- Do not turn off the ignition. Allow the engine to idle for 10 minutes or, with the scan tool, initiate the Store Learned Adaptives routine.
