Sensor, SAFING: Removal
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with the Electronic Pedestrian Protection (EPP) system, disable the system before attempting any EPP system component diagnosis or service. With the ignition switch in the OFF position, disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the EPP system. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental active hood hinge actuator deployment.
To avoid serious or fatal injury, never strike or drop the Electronic Pedestrian Protection (EPP) system impact sensor, as it can damage the impact sensor or affect its calibration. The EPP impact sensor enables the system to deploy the EPP system active hood hinge actuators. If an impact sensor is accidentally dropped during service, the sensor must be scrapped and replaced with a new unit. Failure to observe this warning could result in accidental, incomplete, or improper EPP active hood hinge actuator deployment.
The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged EPP system safing sensor. Whether the EPP system has been deployed or the vehicle has had a front end collision without EPP system deployment, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Pedestrian Protection Deployment before removing the unit from the vehicle. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- With the status of the ignition switch Off, disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
- Partially remove the front fascia lower closeout from the vehicle. Refer to FASCIA, FRONT LOWER, CLOSEOUT, REMOVAL .
- Locate the left or right EPP safing sensor (1) on the back of the front fascia just inboard of the front fog lamp opening (3).
- Disconnect the headlamp and dash wire harness connector (4) from the right or left EPP safing sensor connector receptacle.
- Remove the nut (2) that secures the EPP safing sensor to the stud within the bracket on the back of the front fascia.
- Remove the right or left EPP safing sensor from the front fascia.
