Steering Column

NOTE:

Before proceeding. Refer to COLUMN, WARNING .

  1. Remove the steering column cover reinforcement mounting screws. Remove the steering column cover reinforcement.
    NOTE:

    When an undeployed airbag module is to be removed from the vehicle, first disconnect the battery ground cable and isolate it. Allow the system capacitor to discharge for a minimum of two minutes before starting any removal.

  2. Remove the battery access cover.
  3. Disconnect the negative (-) cable (1) from the battery and isolate the cable.
  4. Position the front wheels of vehicle (and steering wheel) in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position. This action will help keep the clock spring properly centered for reinstallation.

  5. Remove fasteners (2, 3) and kick panel (1).
  6. Remove the driver airbag. Refer to AIR BAG, DRIVER, REMOVAL .
  7. Disconnect the wiring connector at the clockspring.
  8. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, REMOVAL .
  9. Push the tilt lever downward to the released position.

  10. Remove the four screws (1) attaching the lower shroud to the upper shroud. After removing the screws, un-clip the upper and lower shrouds from one another by applying hand pressure along the seams where the shrouds connect on the sides.

  11. Remove the two screws (1) attaching the upper shroud to the column.

  12. Remove the remaining screw (1) attaching the upper shroud (1) to the column.
  13. Push the tilt lever upward, locking the column in place.
  14. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM).

  15. Remove the intermediate shaft coupling bolt (2).
  16. Separate the intermediate shaft (1) at the base of the column from the shaft extension.
  17. Remove the wiring harness routing clips (1) from the bottom of the Steering Column.

    NOTE:

    If the same steering column is to be reinstalled, clamp the tilt lever to lock the column in place so that it can be easily reinstalled in the same orientation.

  18. Remove the mounting bolts (1) attaching the steering column to the instrument panel.
  19. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
  20. To remove remaining components from the column, Refer to COLUMN, DISASSEMBLY .
