Restraints System (Service Information): CLOCKSPRING: Installation
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbags, airbag curtains, knee blocker, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS)/negative battery cable assembly from the negative battery post, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
If the clockspring is not properly centered in relation to the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS), steering wheel, steering shaft and steering gear, it may be damaged or Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) may be set in the SAS. Service replacement clocksprings are shipped pre-centered and with a locking pin installed. This locking pin should not be removed until the clockspring has been installed on the steering column.
- Install the multifunction switch onto the clockspring. Refer to SWITCH, MULTIFUNCTION, INSTALLATION .
- With the centered clockspring rotor and case secured to each other, or with the plastic locking pin installed, carefully slide the clockspring down over the steering column upper shaft far enough to access and connect all the wire harness connectors and their wiring retainers to the clockspring.
- Position the clockspring (2) onto the steering column housing (3).
- From above the steering column, install and tighten the captive screws (1) that secure the back of the clockspring to the steering column. Tighten the screws to the proper. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install and tighten the screw (2) on the face of the clockspring that secures the clockspring (1) to the steering column. Tighten the screw to the proper. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the upper and lower shrouds onto the steering column housing. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, UPPER, INSTALLATION .
- Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, INSTALLATION
.NOTE:
When installing the steering wheel, be certain to index the engagement dowel/drive pin on the upper surface of the clockspring rotor with the slot cast into the lower surface of the steering wheel armature hub.
- Remove the plastic locking pin or any other device that is being used to secure the clockspring rotor to the clockspring case to maintain clockspring centering.
- Connect the steering wheel wire harness connector to the upper clockspring connector receptacle. Be certain that the steering wheel wire harness is routed between the steering wheel back trim cover and the steering wheel armature.
- Install the Driver AirBag (DAB) onto the steering wheel. Refer to AIR BAG, DRIVER, INSTALLATION .
- Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
Proper clockspring installation must also be confirmed by viewing the SAS Menu Item, Data Display function using a diagnostic scan tool.
