Module, Electronic Shift (ESM): Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2021 Chrysler 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The Electronic Shifter (E-Shifter) assembly incorporates an Electronic Shift Module (ESM). The ESM communicates with the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and other Electronic Control Units (ECU) on the Controller Area Network-Chassis (CAN-C) bus. There is also a dedicated CAN-electric Powertrain (CAN-ePT) bus that is used only by the ESM and TCM. If one CAN bus is faulted, the other CAN bus transmits and receives the information required for uninterrupted operation.

The ESM can set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) when a fault is detected. The E-shifter assembly Light Emitting Diode (LED) backlighting can also indicate a fault by flashing the gear selection indicator on and off or turning it off completely.

The E-Shifter offers (P, R, N, D, M) modes of function. The M selection (manual mode) is engaged by moving the shift-lever sideways to the M position. Requests to up or down shift are achieved by moving the lever fore or aft once in the manual position.

The shifter knob is the only serviceable part of the E-Shifter assembly.
