Steering System: Column: Removal

  1. Position the front wheels of vehicle (and steering wheel) in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position. This will help keep the clockspring properly centered for reinstallation.
  2. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, REMOVAL .
  3. Remove the lower steering column shroud. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, UPPER, REMOVAL .
  4. Remove the upper steering column shroud. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, UPPER, REMOVAL .
  5. Push the tilt lever downward to the released position.
  6. Push the tilt lever upward, locking the column in place.
  7. Remove the clockspring. Refer to CLOCKSPRING, REMOVAL .

  8. Remove the steering column pinch bolt (1).
  9. Separate the steering shaft from the steering gear.

  10. Disengage the wiring harness routing clip (2).
  11. Remove the steering column nuts (1).

  12. Remove the steering column bolts (1).
  13. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
