Description And Operation: BEV
DESCRIPTION
The ESM is part of the gear shifter. The rotary gear shifter is located in the Instrument Panel (IP). If it is necessary to service the ESM, the shifter must be replaced.
Gear range selection for the vehicle is accomplished by the SLA. The ESM communicates the shifter position over the Controller Area Network-Chassis (CAN-C) Bus. The ESM controls the shifter position indicator lighting. The Motor Control Processor A (MCPA) will control the motor output for direction.
With the ignition on and the brake pedal applied, the driver can use the shift lever to select either P ark, R everse, N eutral, or D rive positions.
OPERATION
The ESM:
- Communicates the shift lever position via the Controller Area Network-Chassis (CAN-C) data bus.
- Will broadcast a redundant signal via the CAN-C EPT data bus.
- Incorporates an actuator that allows the knob to be locked for purposes of Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) function.
- Positions have a detent to keep the knob in the position it is placed in.
- Is serviced as a component of the Shifter Assembly.
- Can set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) when a fault is detected.
