Tie Rod Assembly: Inspection
- Inspect ball joints for pitting and wear. Check for damaged or deformed tie rod. Check boots for cracks and cuts.
- Check for ball stud axial deflection. Deflection should be less than .06" (1.5 mm). Replace tie rod end if ball stud axial deflection is greater than specification.
- Check ball stud starting torque. Starting torque should be 4-22 INCH lbs. (0.5-2.5 N.m). If ball joint starting torque is not within specification, replace tie rod end.
