Test 2 - Dis Module, Harness & Coil Test
- Install DIS Diagnostic Cable (Hickok HK-100-306) and EEC-IV Breakout Box (T83L-50-EEC-IV). See Figure. Connect jumper from test pin J54 (DPI) to J2 (IGNDD) on breakout box. If continuous spark is present at any of the 4 right spark plug wires, go to step 8). If not, go to step 2).
- Connect voltmeter leads between test pin J5 (VBATD) and battery negative terminal. Turn ignition on. If voltmeter reading is more than 11 volts, go to step 3). If not, go to step 31).
- Connect voltmeter leads between test pins J32 (PIPD) and J2 (IGNDD). Crank engine in very short bursts. Voltmeter should read zero and 12 volts. Start engine, voltmeter should read 5.5-7.5 volts. If both results are okay, go to step 4). If not, go to step 8) of TEST 3 under TESTING in this article.
- Connect voltmeter leads between test pins J51 (CIDD) and J2 (IGNDD). Crank engine in very short bursts. Voltmeter should read zero and 12 volts. Start engine, voltmeter should read 5.5-7.5 volts. If both results are okay, go to step 5). If not, go to step 1) of TEST 3 under TESTING in this article.
- Turn ignition off. Connect ohmmeter leads between test pin J2 (IGNDD) and battery negative terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 7). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair ground circuit.
- Connect test light between test pins J23 (RC1C) and J5 (VBATD). Crank engine. If test light blinks continuously, go to step 7). If not, go to step 15).
- Connect test light between test pins J24 (RC2C) and J5 (VBATD). Crank engine. If test light blinks continuously, go to step 9). If not, go to step 10). 8). Connect test light between test pins J28 (LC4C) and J5 (VBATD). Crank engine. If test light blinks continuously, go to step 20). If not, go to step 26).
- Connect voltmeter between test pin J26 (RCVBAT) and J2 (IGNDD). Turn ignition on. If voltage is more than 11 volts, replace right coil. If voltage is less than 11 volts, go to step 11).
- Connect test light between test pins J10 (RC2D) and J23 (RC1C). Crank engine. If test light blinks continuously, repair J24 harness for open circuit. If not, go to step 11).
- Check resistance between test pins J24 (RC2C) and J10 (RC3D). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 12). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check RC2C harness for open circuit.
- Disconnect right coil from right coil tee. Crank engine. If test light blinks continuously, replace right coil. If not, go to step 13).
- Disconnect DIS module from output tee. Check resistance between J24 (RC2C) and battery negative terminal. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to step 14). If not, check for short to ground at RC2 harness.
- Reconnect module and coil. Check resistance between test pins J24 (RC2C) and J5 (VBATD) with the ignition off. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace DIS module. If not, check RC2 circuit to VBAT for short.
- Move test light lead from J23 (RC1C) to J18 (RC1D). Crank engine. If test light blinks continuously, RC1 circuit is open. If not, go to step 16).
- Remove right coil from right coil tee. Crank engine. If test light blinks continuously, replace right coil. If not, go to step 17.)
- Check resistance between test pins J23 (RC1C) and J18 (RC1D). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 18). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, RC1 harness circuit is open.
- Remove DIS module from DIS output tee. With ignition off, check resistance between test pins J23 (RC1C) and battery negative terminal. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to step 19). If not, RC1 is shorted to ground.
- Reconnect coil and module. Check resistance between test pins J23 (RC1C) and J5 (VBATD). If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace DIS module. If not, RC1 is shorted to VBAT.
- Move test light lead from J28 (LC4C) to J30 (LC3C). Crank engine. If test light blinks continuously, go to step 21). If not, go to step 22).
- Check voltage between test pins J15 (LCVBAT) and J2 (IGNDD). If voltage is more than 11 volts, replace left coil. If not, repair LCVBAT harness.
- Remove left coil from left coil tee. Crank engine. If test light blinks continuously, replace coil. If not, go to step 23).
- With ignition off, check resistance between test pins J30 (LC3C) and J3 (LC3D). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 24). If not, check for open circuit at LC3 wiring harness.
- Remove DIS module from output tee and left coil from left coil tee. Check resistance between test pins J30 (LC3C) and battery negative terminal. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms go to step 25). If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, check for shorted LC3 circuit.
- Turn ignition off. Check resistance between J30 (LC3C) and J5 (VBAT). If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace DIS module. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, LC3 is shorted to VBAT. Repair harness.
- Move test lead from test pin J28 (LC4C) to J6 (LC4D). Crank engine. If test light blinks continuously, check or repair LC4 for open circuit. If not, go to step 28).
- Remove left coil from left tee. Crank engine, if test light blinks continuously, replace left coil. If not, go to step 28).
- Turn ignition off. Check resistance between test pins J28 (LC4C) and J6 (LC4D). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 29). If not, LC4 circuit is open. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect DIS module from module output tee. Measure resistance between test pin J28 (LC4C) and battery negative terminal. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to step 30). If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, LC4 is shorted to ground. Repair as necessary.
- With ignition off, measure resistance between test pins J28 (LC4C) and J5 (VBAT). If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace DIS module. If not, LC4 is shorted to VBAT. Repair wiring harness as necessary.
- With ignition off, measure resistance between test pin J2 (IGNDD) and battery negative terminal. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair ground circuit. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test pins J5 (VBATD) and J2 (IGNDD). If voltage is more than 11 volts, replace DIS module. If not, repair wire harness as necessary.
- Start engine. Check for continuous spark at all left plug wires. If spark is present, check Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (IDM) circuit. Refer to 2.2L CEC TESTS W/CODES article in COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS section. If not, go to next step.
- Install jumper between test pins J54 (DPI) and J2 (IGNDD). Start engine. If spark is present now, check Dual Plug Inhibit (DPI) circuit. Refer to COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS article. If no spark is present, replace DIS module and repeat step 9) of TEST 1 under TESTING in this article.
