Valve Spool Centering Test

Install a 0-2000 psi pressure gauge and valve assembly between power steering pump and high pressure line. ENSURE gauge valve is completely OPEN. Remove horn button from steering wheel. Attach an INCH lb. torque wrench to steering wheel nut. Center steering wheel. Set engine idle to 1000 RPM. Using torque wrench, rotate steering shaft to either side of center to obtain reading of 250 psi (17.5 kg/cm² ) in each direction.
NOTE: Power steering fluid must be at normal operating temperature and at correct level.
Torque reading should be equal in both directions at 250 psi (17.5 kg/cm² ). If difference between readings exceeds 6 INCH lbs. (.68 N.m), Remove steering gear, replace shaft and control assembly.

NOTE: Only control valve housing and valve seal "O" rings are serviceable.
