Brakelight Switch

  1. Brakelights should activate under a maximum 6 lb. (3 kg) force. If brakelights activate under more than 6 lb. (3 kg) of force, replace brakelight switch. If brakelights do not come on, check fuse and bulbs.
  2. If brakelights work okay but cruise control does not disengage when brake pedal is pressed, perform the following test: on 1992 Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis, check for voltage on circuit No. 298 (Orange/Pink wire) of 6-pin amplifier connector.
  3. On 1992 Mustang, Tempo and Topaz, check for voltage on circuit No. 296 (White/Pink wire). On 1992 Continental, Cougar, Sable, Taurus and Thunderbird, check for voltage on circuit No. 296 (Pink/Orange wire). On all models, press brake pedal causing brakelights to come on.
  4. On Mustang, Tempo and Topaz, check for voltage on circuit No. 810 (Red/Light Green wire) of 6-pin amplifier connector. On all other models, check for voltage on circuit No. 511 (Light Green wire). Difference between voltage readings in steps No. 2) and 4) should not exceed 1.5 volts.
  5. Voltage should not be present on circuit No. 511 (Light Green wire) with brakelights off. If voltage difference is greater than 1.5 volts, high resistance exists in brakelight circuit and must be corrected.
