Description & Operation
The headlamp system consists of two halogen headlamps mounted on retractable mechanisms, two optional fog lamps, a four-position switch mounted on the left side of the instrument panel, and a high beam selector switch, located in the turn signal switch. A manual control knob for the retractor is located beneath each headlamp retractor motor and is reached from under the front fascia. The retractor motor is mounted on a bracket that is attached to the radiator support.
The headlamp retractor motor is located under the retractor hinge unit. The motor pushes up and pulls down on the retractor hinge unit through a motor link assembly which attaches the headlamp housing to the retractor motor. Consequently, the headlamp is pulled to the retracted position without changing headlamp aim. See Fig 1.
The headlamp housing consists of a retractor hinge unit, mounting bracket, headlamp, locking collar, plastic bezel cover, and a headlamp lid. The high intensity halogen headlamp and the wiring connector are a single assembly. The headlamp is installed through the front of the mounting bracket and is held in position by a locking collar. The headlamp housing is mounted to the chassis by the retractor hinge unit.
The headlamp retractor motor always rotates in the same direction. A cam assembly attached to the motor shaft moves the headlamps into their UP or DOWN positions. When the headlamp switch is turned to PARK or OFF position, the ground is removed from the hHeadlamp internal relay. The headlamp internal relay will de-energize and its contact will switch to position 2. Current is now supplied to the headlamp retractors relays through the HEAD fuse, Position 2 of the internal relays contacts, and the DOWN side of the headlamp retractor switches. This action energizes the headlamp retractor relays, pulls the contacts closed and closes the circuits between the RETRA fuse and the headlamp retractor motors. The motors continue to operate until the headlamps reach their full DOWN position and the mechanical switches in the headlamp retractors opens.
