1.8 & 2.2L

  1. Ensure vehicle is at operating temperature, all accessories are off, and transmission is in Park or Neutral. Set parking brake. Ensure idle speed is correct. Connect timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire.
  2. On 2.2L non-turbo engines, disconnect and plug vacuum hoses at distributor. On 1.8L and 2.2L turbo engines, use jumper wire to ground STI test connector. See Fig 1 . Start engine.
  3. Check base ignition timing. See 4-CYLINDER BASE IGNITION TIMING  for specifications. If timing is not to specification, loosen distributor hold-down bolt, and adjust timing as necessary. Turn engine off.
  4. On 2.2L non-turbo engines, connect vacuum hoses to distributor. On 1.8L and 2.2L turbo engines, remove jumper wire from STI test connector. Start engine, and ensure advance mechanism is functioning correctly.
