Variable Assist System Testing

NOTE: Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis & Town Car feature computer assisted diagnostics using STAR Tester (Rotunda 007-00017), or SUPER STAR II Tester (Rotunda 007-00028) hand-held units. Refer to VARIABLE ASSIST TROUBLE CODES TABLE  for code explanation.
  1. To enter diagnostics, perform following procedure. With ignition off, connect STAR Tester to diagnostic connector. See Figure and Figure . Turn ignition on and wait a minimum of 5 seconds. Depress test button on STAR Tester. Code 10 followed by Code 12 or 13 should be displayed. While still holding button down, open and close all four doors and turn steering wheel.
  2. Release STAR Tester button, wait at least 5 seconds, and depress button. Star Tester will display Code 11 if system is okay, or trouble code(s) if problem is found. Turn ignition off to exit testing.

12 Auto Test Passed
13 Auto Test Failure
15 No Drive Cycle Errors Detected
16 EVO Short Circuit
17 EVO Open Circuit
18 Bad Valve
55 Speed Greater Than 15 MPH Not Detected (Drive Only)
74 Steering Wheel Rotation Not Detected
80 Insufficient Battery Voltage To Run Diagnostics
