Exhaust Smoke Or Smell
Visually inspect the following components of the catalytic converter, exhaust system and related components that may effect exhaust gas quality, cause backfire or loss of power.
- Check for leaking fuel injectors.
- Check for damaged air inlet passages.
- Check for inoperative EGR valve. See I - EEC SYS/COMP TESTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
- Check for pinched or crushed exhaust pipe.
- Check for loose or damaged vacuum hoses.
- Check for incorrect idle speed. See ADJUSTMENTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
- Check for dirty air filter.
- Check for damaged catalytic converter.
- Check for misrouted or damaged wiring.
- Check for damaged coil, distributor or spark plugs.
- Check for corroded or loose wiring harness connectors.
- Check EGR system. See I - EEC SYS/COMP TESTS and G - EEC TESTS W/CODES articles in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section..
- Check air intake system. Also, ensure throttle plate and linkages operate properly.
- Check fuel delivery system. See I - EEC SYS/COMP TESTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
- Perform QUICK TEST. See G - EEC TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
- Check PCV system.
- Check engine compression. Check engine mechanical condition. Check intake manifold, manifold gasket, camshaft and valves.
- Ensure idle speed is correct. See IDLE SPEED in ADJUSTMENTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
- Check cooling system.
