Tr Sensor Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Lincoln Continental. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Following procedures use Rotunda Transmission Tester 008-00130.
  1. Ensure Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector and terminals are connected and in good condition. Ensure proper shift linkage adjustment in Overdrive. Turn ignition off. Apply parking brake and place transmission in Neutral. Using TR Sensor Alignment Tool (MLPS T92P-700 10-AH), check alignment. If sensor is aligned, go to next step. If sensor is not aligned, adjust as necessary, clear codes and retest.
  2. Disconnect TR sensor connector. See Figure . Check voltage between Black connector C180 terminals No. 3 (Light Blue/Yellow wire) and No. 2 (Gray/Red wire) with ignition on. If voltage is 4.75-5.25 volts, go to step 5). If voltage is not 4.75-5.25 volts, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Ensure TR sensor is disconnected. Check continuity between test pin No. 91 of breakout box and TR connector terminal No. 2 (Gray/Red wire). Check continuity between test pin No. 64 of breakout box and TR connector terminal No. 3 (Light Blue/Yellow wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open wire(s) reconnect components and retest.
  4. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Ensure TR sensor is disconnected. Check continuity between test pin No. 64 and pins No. 71, 97, 24, 51, 76, 77, 103 and 91 at the breakout box. Check continuity between test pin No. 64 and ground. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short, remove breakout box, reconnect components and retest.
  5. Ensure TR sensor is disconnected. Connect adapter cable (007-00 127) to sensor and TR/MLP-B tester. Using procedures in tester manual, check resistance of sensor in all gear positions. See TR SENSOR TESTING TABLE. If sensor checks okay, and voltage was not present in step 2), replace PCM and go to step 6). If sensor tests bad, replace TR sensor and retest.
  6. Using procedures in tester manual, check park/neutral circuits of sensor in all positions. See TR SENSOR PARK/NEUTRAL TESTING TABLE. If sensor tests okay, go to next step. If sensor tests bad, replace TR sensor, remove breakout box, reconnect components and retest.
    TR SENSOR TESTING

    Transmission Range Ohms
    Park 3370-4607
    Reverse 1304-1593
    Neutral 660-807
    Overdrive 361-442
    Drive 190-232
    First 78-95
    TR SENSOR PARK/NEUTRAL TESTING

  7. Using procedures in tester manual, check reverse circuits of sensor in all positions. See REVERSE TESTING TABLE. If sensor tests okay, system tests okay. If sensor test bad, replace TR sensor. Remove breakout box, reconnect components and retest.
