Test A: Washers Inoperative
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Lincoln Continental. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Check washer reservoir fluid level. If reservoir is full, go to next step. If necessary, refill reservoir and retest system operation.
- Activate washer pump switch. If washer pump operates, go to next step. If washer pump does not operate, go to step 5).
- If washer pump operates but fluid does not squirt from nozzles, inspect pump, nozzles and hoses for blockage. Repair as necessary. If pump, hoses and nozzles are good, go to next step.
- Disconnect hose from washer reservoir and inspect for blockage. If hose is blocked, repair or replace as necessary. If hose is good, replace washer pump and retest system.
- Disconnect washer pump harness connector. Turn ignition on. Check for battery voltage on Black/White wire at washer pump while operating washer switch. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 7).
- Measure resistance of Black wire between washer pump harness connector and ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace washer pump. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire. After repair, retest system.
- Turn ignition on. Set wiper switch for high speed operation. If wipers operate properly, go to next step. If wipers do not operate properly, go to TEST B: WIPERS INOPERATIVE .
- Disconnect Wiper Control Module (WCM) connector. WCM is located behind instrument panel between steering column and radio. Actuate washer switch. Measure resistance between Brown/White wire terminal and Dark Blue/White wire terminal of WCM connector. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step 11).
- Disconnect multifunction switch 7-pin connector. Actuate washer switch. Measure resistance of Brown/White wire between multifunction switch 7-pin connector and ground. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair open in Brown/White wire and ground. Retest system.
- Actuate washer switch. Measure resistance of Dark Blue/White wire between multifunction switch 7-pin connector and ground. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace multifunction switch. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair Dark Blue/White wire as necessary. After repair, retest system.
- Measure resistance of Black/White wire between WCM connector and ground. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace WCM. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair open in Black/White wire. After repair, retest system.
