WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tester, perform On-Demand Self-Test on Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting (SCIL) module. If DTCs B1353 and B1364 exist, go to step 11). If DTCs B1353 and B1364 do not exist, go to next step.
- Using scan tester, perform On-Demand Self-Test on SCIL module and check for continuous DTCs. If DTC B1353 now exists, go to next step. If DTC B1353 does not exist, go to step 9).
- Using scan tester, check PID for IGN_KEY at SCIL module. If PID for IGN_KEY indicates IN, go to next step. If PID for IGN_KEY does not indicate IN, go to step 5).
- Using scan tester, perform On-Demand Self-Test on SCIL module. If DTC B1353 does not exist, go to step 9). If DTC B1353 exists, replace SCIL module and retest system operation. SCIL module is located behind passenger's side of instrument panel, to the right of glove box. SCIL module contains one 16-pin connector, one 22-pin connector and two 26-pin connectors. See Figure .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect connector C288 from SCIL module. See Figure . SCIL module is located behind passenger's side of instrument panel, to the right of glove box. SCIL module contains one 16-pin connector, one 22-pin connector and two 26-pin connectors.
- Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 18 (Black/Pink wire) on connector C288 for SCIL module. See Figure . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, replace SCIL module. Retest system operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 8-pin connector C299 from ignition switch. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 8 (Black/Pink wire) on connector for ignition switch and terminal No. 18 (Black/Pink wire) on connector C288 for SCIL module. See Figure .
- If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace ignition switch. Retest system operation. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit on Black/Pink wire between ignition switch and SCIL module. Retest system operation.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tester, perform ACTIVE COMMAND on SCIL module. Select PIDLATCH and then check PID for IGN_KEY. Monitor display of PID for IGN_KEY while moving wiring harness and connectors between ignition switch and SCIL module. SCIL module is located behind passenger's side of instrument panel, to the right of glove box. SCIL module contains one 16-pin connector, one 22-pin connector and two 26-pin connectors. See Figure .
- If PID for IGN_KEY does not change state while moving wiring harness, system is operating properly at this time. If PID for IGN_SW changes state while moving wiring harness, repair Black/Pink wire in wiring harness between ignition switch and SCIL module for loose or intermittent connection. Retest system operation.
- Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect 8-pin connector C299 from ignition switch. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 7 (Light Green/Purple wire) on connector C299 for ignition switch. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 13).
- Reinstall 8-pin connector C299 on ignition switch. Turn ignition on. Using scan tester, perform On-Demand Self-Test on SCIL module. If DTCs B1353 and B1364 exist, replace ignition switch. Retest system operation. If a single DTC exists, perform appropriate DTC test under DTC TESTS. If no DTCs exist, go to step 21).
- Remove fuse No. 26 (20-amp) from engine compartment fuse box at driver's side of engine compartment, near spring tower. Using ohmmeter, check fuse No. 26.
- If fuse No. 26 is okay, repair open circuit on Light Green/Purple wire between fuse No. 26 and ignition switch. If fuse No. 26 is defective, go to next step.
- Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 7 (Light Green/Purple wire) on connector C299 for ignition switch. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short to ground on Light Green/Purple wire between fuse No. 26 and ignition switch. Retest system operation.
- Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 8 (Black/Pink wire) on connector C299 for ignition switch. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to step 19). If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, go to next step.
- Disconnect connector C288 from SCIL module. See Figure . SCIL module is located behind passenger's side of instrument panel, to the right of glove box. SCIL module contains one 16-pin connector, one 22-pin connector and two 26-pin connectors.
- Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 8 (Black/Pink wire) on connector C299 for ignition switch. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace SCIL module. Retest system operation. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short to ground on Black/Pink wire between ignition switch and SCIL module. Retest system operation.
- Remove fuse No. 5 (10-amp), fuse No. 11 (10-amp) and fuse No. 17 (10-amp) from fuse panel at driver's side end of instrument panel, near door opening. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 5 (White/Yellow wire) on connector C299 for ignition switch.
- If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace ignition switch. Retest system operation. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short to ground on White/Yellow wire between ignition switch and fuses in fuse panel at driver's side end of instrument panel, near door opening. Retest system operation.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tester, perform ACTIVE COMMAND on SCIL module. Select PIDLATCH and then check PID for IGN_SCI and IGN_KEY.
- Monitor display of PID for IGN_SCI and IGN_KEY while moving wiring harness and connectors between following components:
- Ignition switch and SCIL module on Black/Pink wire.
- Ignition switch and fuse panel at driver's side end of instrument panel, near door opening on White/Yellow wire.
