Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting (SCIL) Module

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The SCIL module is used for controlling the PATS. SCIL module is located behind passenger's side of instrument panel, to the right of glove box. SCIL module contains one 16-pin connector, one 22-pin connector and two 26-pin connectors. See Figure . When electronically coded ignition key is energized, passive anti-theft receiver antenna receives a signal from ignition key and transfers the signal to the SCIL module. The SCIL module decodes the signal and compares the code to the codes in the memory.

If proper code is received from electronically coded ignition key, SCIL module activates Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by use of the module communications network. This allows vehicle to start and anti-theft indicator light will flash for 3 seconds. If improper code is received from electronically coded ignition key, SCIL module will deactivate the PCM by using the module communications network. This prevents vehicle from starting and anti-theft indicator light will flash for 15 minutes. The SCIL module contains a self-diagnostic system which stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) if a problem exists in the PATS or a system operated in conjunction with the PATS. DTC may be retrieved from SCIL module for diagnosis of PATS. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM  .
