Pinpoint Test G: No Communication With The Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS) Module

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: The Flex Probe Kit must be used for all test connections. Use of standard multimeter probes may damage wiring terminals.
  1. G1 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE VAPS MODULE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: VAPS Module C2231b.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between ground and:
      • VAPS module C2231b-1, circuit 418 (DG/YE), harness side.
      • VAPS module C2231b-7, circuit 418 (DG/YE), harness side.
      • VAPS module C2231b-2, circuit 298 (VT/OG), harness side.
    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?

    Yes  : GO to G2.

No  : VERIFY BJB fuse 5 (10A) and CJB fuse 8 (10A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the affected circuit(s) for an open. REPEAT the self-test.

  2. G2 CHECK THE VAPS MODULE GROUND
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: VAPS Module C2231b.
    • Measure the resistance between the VAPS module 22231b-12, circuit 676 (PK/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes  : CHECK the module communications network. REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .

No  : REPAIR circuit 676 (PK/OG) for a short to ground. REPEAT the self-test.
