Restraints Control Module (RCM)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

RCM contains a microcomputer, which monitors electrical system components and connections. RCM performs a system self-check of air bag system internal circuits every time ignition switch is turned to RUN position. RCM also operates AIR BAG warning light during initial system self-check and whenever a system fault is detected.

Faults are translated into a Light Flash Code (LFC), which is displayed through flashing of AIR BAG warning light. A LFC is a series of flashes and pauses of the AIR BAG warning light, which represents a 2-digit number and is always displayed at least twice. The RCM also communicates through the Data Link Connector (DLC) current and historical Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If a system fault exists and AIR BAG warning light is malfunctioning, an audible tone will sound, indicating need for service.
