Section 197 (Overhead Console (Message Center)): Self-Diagnostics

NOTE: All vehicle doors must be closed and the engine must be running during message center self-test.

To enter message center self-test, press the E/M and MODE buttons at the same time while starting the vehicle. Release both buttons once the vehicle is running. To move through available tests, press MODE button until desired test is reached. See MESSAGE CENTER SELF TEST INDEX  table for message center self-test results. To end message center self-test, turn ignition switch to OFF position. If message center self-test is okay, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.

MESSAGE CENTER SELF TEST INDEX

Numeric Display & Compass Display Test Description Result
__._ + rL Read Only Memory Test (1)
__._ + NL Non-Volatile Memory Test (1)
All Segments Displayed Display Test. Press E/M Button Until Display Cycles Through OFF, GRID 1, GRID 2, & GRID 3 (1)
__ + FF Fuel Flow Test (2)
__ + SP Speed Input Test (2)
__ + bL Battery Voltage Test (3)
__ + FL Fuel Level Input Test (2)
__ + dL Rheostat Input Test (4) (5)
__ + /GAL Fuel Tank Capacity Test (2)
PAS, FAL, BAD + CP Compass Verification Test (6)
__ + F1, F2 Final Test Date Information (7)
__ + N1, N2, N3, N4 Module Serial Number Information (7)
(1) If display flashes at any time during test step, replace message center.
(2) If no signal is received or signal is incorrect, go to SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
(3) If reading is not between 13-15 volts, go to GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in ELECTRICAL. to diagnose charging system concern. If battery voltage is between 13-15 volts but the message center does not display the actual battery voltage, repair open in Red/White wire. If Red/White is okay, replace message center.
(4) Rotate panel dimmer switch while performing this step.
(5) If no signal is received, go to appropriate INTERIOR LIGHTS in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
(6) If PAS is displayed, system is okay. If FAL is displayed, replace message center. If BAD is displayed, go to TEST D .
