Gearshift Cables: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2011 Mercury Milan and 2011 Ford Fusion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    NOTE: When inserting the gearshift cables through the bulkhead, use care and do not damage the heat shielding.
    NOTE: When inserting the gearshift cables through the bulkhead, make sure the arrow on the grommet is pointing upward.
  1. Pull the gearshift cables through the bulkhead into the exterior.
  2. Install the 2 gearshift cable grommet nuts and attach the gearshift cables to the floor.
    • Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

  3. Install the wiring harness onto the studs.
  4. NOTE: Make sure the gearshift cables are fully seated into the gearshift lever base or damage may occur.

  5. Connect the gearshift cables to the gearshift lever base.
  6. Connect the select cable and the shift cable to the gearshift lever.

  7. Position the insulation blanket into place.
  8. Install the RCM. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM -- FUSION, MILAN & MKZ article.
  9. NOTE: Make sure the gearshift cables are fully seated into the transaxle bracket or damage may occur.
    NOTE: The gearshift cable ends and transaxle bracket slots are unique. They can only be fully seated in the correct slot.
    NOTE: The top cable will have id tape.

  10. Connect the gearshift cables to the transaxle bracket.
  11. Connect the gearshift cables to the transaxle shift control lever.

  12. Adjust the gearshift cables. For additional information, refer to MANUAL TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION & CLUTCH - GENERAL INFORMATION - FUSION & MKZ article.
  13. Install the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING & CABLES -- FUSION, MILAN & MKZ article.
  14. Install the heater core and evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL -- FUSION, MILAN & MKZ article.
