Test H: Memory Seat Inoperative Using Memory Set Switch

CAUTION: Side air bag system must be deactivated for diagnosis of power seat (if equipped). See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. Air Bag Simulator (418-F088) must be installed under seats to floor connector, and removed before operating vehicle.
NOTE: Before beginning this test, ensure seat and seat track are free from all obstructions. For connector identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  .
  1. Deactivate air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. Ensure transmission is in Park. Turn ignition off. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Retrieved and record continuous DTCs. Clear continuous DTCs. Perform Driver's Seat Module (DSM) self-test. If no DTCs were retrieved during self-test, go to next step. If any DTCs were retrieved and memory switch LED fails to illuminate during self-test, go to step  5 . If any DTCs were retrieved and memory switch LED illuminates during self-test, go to appropriate step. See DTC TEST STEP  table.

    (1) Replace driver's seat module.
  2. Using NGS tester, monitor DSM PIDs MEM1_SW, MEM2_SW and MEMS_SW on while activating memory switch in all positions. If PID value does not agree with switch position and fuse No. 1 is blown, go to step  7 . If PID value does not agree with switch position and fuse No. 1 is okay, go to next step. If PID value agrees with seat control switch position, go to step  9 .
  3. Remove memory switch. Test memory switch. See MEMORY SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If memory switch is defective, replace memory switch as necessary. If memory switch is okay, go to next step.
  4. Ensure memory switch harness connector is still disconnected. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Orange/Light Green wire at memory switch harness connector. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Orange/Light Green wire.
  5. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and Black wire at memory switch harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire.
  6. Disconnect DSM 22-pin harness connector C337. DSM is located under driver's seat. Disconnect Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module Gray 22-pin harness connector C338. RAP module is located behind left rear quarter panel. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Brown/Light Green, Black/Orange, Brown/Orange and White/Orange wires at memory switch harness connector. If voltage does not exist at any wire, go to next step. If voltage exists at any wire, repair short to voltage in appropriate wire(s). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  7. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and Brown/Light Green, Black/Orange, Brown/Orange and White/Orange wires at memory switch harness connector. If all resistance readings are 10 k/ohms or more, go to next step. If any resistance reading is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in appropriate wire(s). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  8. Measure resistance of Brown/Light Green, Black/Orange, Brown/Orange and White/Orange wires between DSM 22-pin harness connector C337 and memory switch harness connector. If all resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, replace driver's seat module. See DRIVER'S SEAT MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If any resistance reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire(s). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  9. Place seat in center position using seat control switch. Using NGS tester, monitor PIDs SFWD_P, SFNT_P and SREAR_P while moving seat through all positions. PID valves should increased during forward and upward movement and decreased during rearward and downward movement. If PID valves changed as specified, replace driver's seat module. See DRIVER'S SEAT MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If PID valves did not change as specified, go to appropriate step. See TEST STEP  table.

Improper PID SFNT_P Value Next Step
Improper PID SREAR_P Value Step  13
Improper PID SFWD_P Value Step  16
  10. Turn ignition off. Disconnect DSM Black 16-pin harness connector C351. Disconnect memory seat position sensor 8-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Light Green/Red, Orange/Red and Orange/White wires at memory seat position sensor harness connector. If voltage does not exist at any wire, go to next step. If voltage exists at any wire, repair short to voltage in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  11. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and Light Green/Red, Orange/Red and Orange/White wire at memory seat position sensor harness connector. If all resistance readings are more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  12. Measure resistance of Light Green/Red, Orange/Red and Orange/White wires between memory seat position sensor harness connector and DSM 22-pin harness connector C351. If all resistance readings are less than 5 ohms, replace front seat track assembly. See POWER SEAT TRACK  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
