Test G: Invalid Format Key Code From Ignition Key Transponder
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Navigator, 2002 Ford Expedition, 2001 Lincoln Navigator, and 2001 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Large metallic objects on the same key ring with Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) ignition key may cause vehicle starting problems and record DTCs under certain conditions. If a fault cannot be identified, examine key ring for such objects. If objects are found that could interfere with PATS operation, turn ignition switch to LOCK position and restart engine with all metallic objects held away from ignition key. Encoded key must be an approved key by Ford, Rotunda, Ilco, Curtis or Strattec are approved by Ford for use with PATS.
- Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to data link connector. Perform instrument cluster self-test. If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1602 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1602 is not retrieved, system is okay.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check that all ignition keys are Ford approved. Cut a NEW encoded ignition key. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Program NEW encoded ignition key. See ERASE ALL KEYS & PROGRAM 2 KEYS . Perform instrument cluster self-test. If DTC B1602 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1602 is not retrieved, system is okay. If customer has any remaining encoded ignition keys, program encoded ignition key(s). See KEY PROGRAMMING USING 2 PROGRAMMED KEYS .
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Replace PATS transceiver module. See PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM TRANSCEIVER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position and perform instrument cluster self-test. If any DTCs are retrieved, diagnose and repair those DTCs before proceeding. See HYBRID ELECTRONIC CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX table under SYSTEM TESTS. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay.
