Symptom Chart

SYMPTOM CHART

Condition Possible Sources Action
  • Loss of engine coolant
  • Radiator.
  • Thermostat housing assembly.
  • Coolant pump seal.
  • Radiator hoses.
  • Heater hoses.
  • Heater core.
  • Engine gaskets.
  • Degas bottle and hoses.
  • The engine overheats
  • Thermostat.
  • Low coolant fill.
  • Airlock in the system.
  • Coolant pump.
  • Internal engine coolant leak.
  • Radiator.
  • Radiator airflow obstruction.
  • Cooling fan.
  • Cooling fan wiring.
  • Pressure relief cap.
  • The engine does not reach normal operating temperature
  • Thermostat.
  • Low coolant fill.
  • The block heater does not operate correctly
  • Block heater power cable.
  • DISCONNECT the power cable from the heater.
  • Block heater.
  • CHECK the resistance in all three power cable circuits. If the resistance is greater than 5 ohms in any circuit, INSTALL a new power cable. If the resistance is less than 5 ohms in all three circuits, INSTALL a new block heater.
  • Noisy cooling fan operation
  • Foreign particle contamination.
  • Fan motor.
    NOTE: Make sure key is in the OFF position and the cooling fan has stopped rotating before servicing.
  • REMOVE the contaminants from the cooling fan and shroud. CHECK for normal operation. If still noisy, INSTALL a new cooling fan assembly.
  • The electric cooling fan(s) is inoperative in one or more speeds
  • Fuses.
  • Circuitry.
  • Cooling fan motor.
  • Relay.
  • Cooling fan resistor.
  • The electric cooling fan(s) stays on all the time
  • Circuitry.
  • Relay(s).
  • The electric cooling fan(s) incorrect operation
  • Circuitry.
  • Relay(s).
