Test B: Warning Indicator Is On With Engine Running, System Is Not Charging

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2003 Ford RV Cutaway, 2003 Ford Econoline, 2003 Ford E550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford E450 Super Duty, and 2003 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Measure voltage between ground and generator terminal B+ (Black/Orange wire). See Fig 1. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair Black/Orange wire between generator and battery junction box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  2. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and generator harness connector terminal "A" (Orange/Light Blue wire). See Fig 2. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair circuit between generator and Brown fusible link "C". See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  3. Connect generator 3-pin connector. Start engine and let idle. Using DVOM, backprobe and measure voltage between ground and generator harness connector terminal "I" (Light Green/Red wire). See Fig 2. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. Measure voltage between generator terminal B+ (Black/Orange wire) and positive battery terminal. Turn headlights on. Turn rear defogger on. Turn blower motor to high speed. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM. If voltage is less than .5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is .5 volts or more, repair Black/Orange wire between generator and battery junction box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  5. Turn ignition off. Remove generator from vehicle. Measure resistance between voltage regulator "F" terminal screw on back of generator and generator 3-pin connector terminal "A" (component side). See Fig 1 and Fig 3 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace generator. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace voltage regulator.
