Test D: Warning Indicator Is On With Engine Running, System Is Charging

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2003 Ford RV Cutaway, 2003 Ford Econoline, 2003 Ford E550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford E450 Super Duty, and 2003 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Observe warning indicator. If warning indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If warning indicator illuminates, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect generator harness connector. Check generator 1-pin harness connector for damage, corrosion and looseness (White/Black wire). If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary.
  3. NOTE: There are 2 terminals "S" on generator. Ensure voltage measurement is made at 1-pin harness connector and not at 3-pin harness connector.
  4. Start engine and let idle. Using DVOM, backprobe and measure voltage between ground and generator 1-pin harness connector terminal "S" (White/Black wire). See Figure. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM. If voltage is 5 volts or more, replace voltage regulator. If voltage is less than 5 volts, replace generator.
