Test D: The Compass Is Inaccurate

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Navigator and 2002 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Perform message center self-test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS . Cycle through self-test procedure until Compass Verification Test is reached. If test display is FAL, replace compass sensor module and test system operation. See COMPASS SENSOR MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If test display is BAD, go to step  5. If test display is not FAL or BAD, go to next step.
  2. Perform compass zone adjustment. See COMPASS ZONE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENT. If correct compass zone is obtained, go to next step. If compass zone is not correct, replace compass sensor module. See COMPASS SENSOR MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Perform compass calibration. See COMPASS CALIBRATION  under ADJUSTMENT. If CAL is displayed, go to next step. If CAL is not displayed, replace compass sensor module. See COMPASS SENSOR MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Ensure compass display is correct with vehicle positioned as specified. See VEHICLE LOCATION & COMPASS DISPLAY  table. If compass display is correct, system is okay at this time. If compass display is not correct, replace compass sensor module. See COMPASS SENSOR MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

  5. Install a known-good compass sensor module. See COMPASS SENSOR MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Wait 10 seconds and observe compass display. If display indicates BAD, reinstall original compass sensor module and go to next step. If display does not indicate BAD, replace compass sensor module.
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect message center harness connector C928. Disconnect compass sensor module harness connector C905. Measure resistance in White/Orange wire between message center harness connector C928 terminal No. 3 and compass sensor module harness connector C905 terminal No. 3. See Figure and Fig 1 . Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance between ground and message center harness connector C928 terminal No. 3 (White/Orange wire). Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in White/Orange wire and test system operation.

  7. Measure resistance in White/Black wire between message center harness connector C928 terminal No. 2 and compass sensor module harness connector C905 terminal No. 4. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance between ground and message center harness connector C928 terminal No. 2 (White/Black wire). Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If resistance is as specified, replace message center. See MESSAGE CENTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in White/Black wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
