Test H: Personal Security Alarm Does Not Operate From Remote Transmitter

NOTE: After making any repair, repeat Generic Electronic Module (GEM) self-test using WDS or NGS tester.
  1. Operate horn switch. If horn sounds, go to next step. If horn does not sound, repair horn. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), located below instrument panel. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position.Using WDS or NGS tester, access GEM Customer Preference Items. Check customer preferences for horn chirp enabled. If preference for horn chirp is enabled, go to next step. If preference for horn chirp is not enabled, enable horn chirp. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  3. Using WDS or NGS tester, access GEM HORN CONTROL. Trigger horn ON. If horn sounds, go to next step. If horn does not sound, go to step  9.
  4. Using WDS or NGS tester, access GEM FUNCTION TEST, TRANSMITTER TIC DATA. Also access GEM FUNCTION TESTS, TRANSMITTER TIC/DATA. And access PROGRAM TIC and select 4 memory locations. Record alpha-numeric codes. If 2 TICs are stored at TIC1, TIC2, TIC3 and TIC4 positions, go to next step. If no TICs are stored at TIC1, TIC2, TIC3 and TIC4 positions, program all remote keyless entry transmitters. See REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  5. Using WDS or NGS tester, access GEM FUNCTION TESTS. While pressing panic button on remote transmitter, monitor GEM LAST TIC/DATA RECEIVED. If an 8-digit alpha-numeric code does not appear for LAST TIC RECEIVED, and LAST DATA RECEIVED output does not match button pressed on remote transmitter, go to next step. If an 8-digit alpha-numeric code appears for LAST TIC RECEIVED, and LAST DATA RECEIVED output matches button pressed on remote transmitter, go to step  7.
  6. Using WDS or NGS tester, access GEM FUNCTION TESTS. While pressing a second remote transmitter panic button, monitor TRANSMITTER TIC DATA. If an 8-digit alpha-numeric code does not appear for LAST TIC RECEIVED, and/or LAST DATA RECEIVED does not match button pressed, go to next step. If an 8-digit alpha-numeric code appears for LAST TIC RECEIVED and LAST DATA RECEIVED matches button pressed, check battery in first transmitter. If battery is okay, replace first remote transmitter. Program all remote keyless entry transmitters. See REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING. If battery is faulty, replace as necessary. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  7. Using WDS or NGS tester, access GEM FUNCTION TESTS. Monitor TRANSMITTER TIC/DATA. If TIC RECEIVED matches one of TICs recorded from step 4)  , go to next step. If TIC RECEIVED does not match one of TICs recorded from step 4)  , program all remote keyless entry transmitters. See REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  8. Using WDS or NGS tester, access GEM FUNCTION TESTS. Monitor TRANSMITTER TIC/DATA. If each button pressed on remote transmitter creates expected LAST DATA RECEIVED output, go to next step. If each button pressed on remote transmitter does not create expected LAST DATA RECEIVED output, program all remote keyless entry transmitters. See REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  9. Disconnect all GEM harness connectors. Check all GEM harness connectors terminals for corroded or pushed-out pins. If connector or terminals are faulty, repair or replace as necessary. If connector and terminals are okay, reconnect all GEM harness connectors. Ensure all other system connectors are properly seated. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern still present, install a new GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern is not present, system is operating properly. Clear DTCs and check system for normal operation.
