Test D: Warning Indicator Is On With Engine Running, System Is Charging

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Navigator, 2002 Lincoln Blackwood, 2002 Ford Pickup, and 2002 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Observe warning indicator. If warning indicator illuminates, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument panel. On Lightning models, if warning indicator does not illuminate, replace generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. On all other models, if warning indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect generator harness connector. Check generator 1-pin harness connector for damage, corrosion and looseness (White/Black wire). If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary.
  3. NOTE: There are 2 terminals "S" on generator. Ensure voltage measurement is made at 1-pin harness connector and not at 3-pin harness connector.
  4. Start engine and let idle. Using DVOM, backprobe and measure voltage between ground and generator 1-pin harness connector terminal "S" (White/Black wire). See Figure. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM. If voltage is 5 volts or more, replace voltage regulator. See VOLTAGE REGULATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If voltage is less than 5 volts, replace generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
