2-4 Band: Assembly

  1. Clean the components with a suitable solvent and use compressed air to dry all parts and clean the fluid passage. Perform the following before assembly:
    • Inspect the servo band piston for damage or wear.
    • Inspect the 2-4 band for wear and burning.
    • Check the servo band piston and servo piston large and small seals for burrs or damage.
    2. NOTE: Do not compress the servo piston spring when measuring it with vernier calipers.
  2. Measure the free length of the servo piston spring and check for deformation.
    • If not within the specification, replace the servo piston spring.

    NOTE: Do not compress the orifice check spring when measuring it with vernier calipers.
    NOTE: The orifice check spring has 10.1 coils.
  3. Measure the free length of the orifice check spring and check for deformation.
    • If not within the specification, replace the orifice check spring.

  4. Assemble the orifice valve.
    1. Slide the washer onto the orifice holder.
    2. Slide on the orifice check spring.
    3. Slide on the orifice valve.

  5. Install the orifice valve in the transmission case.

  6. Install the new servo piston large seal and servo piston small seal on the servo piston.
    1. Apply Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the servo piston large seal with inner diameter (piston stem side): 58.5 mm (2.303 in).
    2. Apply Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the servo piston small seal with inner diameter (servo retainer side): 25.5 mm (1.004 in).

  7. Assemble the servo piston stem and the servo band piston.
    1. Slide the spacer onto the servo piston stem.
    2. Slide the servo band piston onto the servo piston stem.
    3. Install the servo piston clip into the hole at the end of the servo piston stem.

  8. Apply Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the new servo piston cover seal and install it on the servo retainer.
    • Use the servo piston cover seal with inner diameter of 65.7 mm (2.587 in).

  9. Slide servo retainer onto the servo piston stem.

  10. Slide the servo piston spring onto the servo piston stem.

  11. Insert the servo band piston assembly into the transmission case and install the servo piston snap ring.
