Principles Of Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Town Car. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

RCM must be programmed as part of the repair procedure. If this procedure is not followed, the RCM will not function correctly and may set a number of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), including DTC B2477, which indicates that necessary data has not been programmed into the RCM.

Modules that need to be programmed should not be exchanged between vehicles. In most cases the parameter values or settings are unique to that vehicle, and if not set correctly, will cause concerns or faults.

If the RCM and PCM do not contain the correct information, the scan tool will either request "As Built" data or display a list of items that will be required to manually configure. The scan tool will program the RCM based on the data that is entered.

It is no longer necessary to command the scan tool to gather module option content from the old module. The scan tool automatically obtains any available module option content from the old module during the vehicle identification routine that runs when the scan tool is initially connected to the vehicle. It is important that you connect the scan tool to the vehicle and obtain configuration data prior to removing module.
