Test D: Anti-Theft Number Of Programmed Encoded Keys Below Minimum

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Ford Excursion and 2000 Ford Excursion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: After any repairs, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - EXCURSION & F250/F350 SUPER DUTY article.
  1. Using scan tool, retrieve and record all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Clear Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) DTCs. Perform PATS self-test, then retrieve PATS DTCs. If PATS DTC B1213 is only DTC retrieved, go to next step. If PATS DTCs other than B1213 are retrieved, proceed to appropriate test(s). See PATS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Using scan tool, read PATS PID NUMKEYS. If PATS PID NUMKEYS displays less than 2 encoded ignition keys, go to next step. If PATS PID NUMKEYS displays 2 or more encoded ignition keys, PATS is okay.
  3. NOTE: Two programmed encoded ignition keys must be available to start vehicle.
  4. Cut a new encoded ignition key. Program new encoded ignition key. See KEY PROGRAMMING - WITH PROGRAMMED KEYS  under PROGRAMMING. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If THEFT indicator proves out (illuminates for 3 seconds, then goes out), use scan tool to clear DTCs. Perform PATS self-test, then retrieve PATS DTCs. If any PATS DTCs are retrieved, proceed to appropriate test(s). See PATS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no PATS DTCs are retrieved, test is complete. If THEFT indicator remains illuminated, repeat this test from step  1 with a second new encoded ignition key. If THEFT indicator is flashing, retrieve DTC(s) stored for new fault, and proceed to appropriate test(s). See PATS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
