Steering Column: Disassembly

CAUTION: The shift inter-lock actuator is not serviceable. If service to the actuator is required, the steering column assembly must be replaced. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN  in REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION.
  1. Remove the ignition lock cylinder. For additional information, refer to IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER-FUNCTIONAL  or IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER-NON-FUNCTIONAL .
  2. WARNING: To avoid the risk of serious personal injury, follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the steering column removal procedure.
  3. Remove the steering column. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN .
  4. Remove the screws and the steering column upper bracket.

  5. Depress the two retainer tabs and remove the ignition switch.

  6. Remove the ignition switch spring.

  7. Pull downward on the spring and release the spring tension, route the spring above the spring guide.

  8. Cut the spring retainer and remove the spring.

  9. Remove the nut.

  10. Remove the spring guide and washer.

  11. Remove the bolt and sleeve and spring, and pivot the steering column mounting bracket upward.

  12. Remove the washer.

  13. Remove the bearing.

  14. Remove the tilt lever.

  15. Remove the bolts and the shift cable and harness retainer brackets.

  16. CAUTION: Do not use a screwdriver to separate the clamp retainer or damage can result.

  17. Using a suitable punch from the opposite side, remove the steering column clamp retainer.
