Removal & Installation: Compressor: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Saturn LW300, 2002 Saturn LW200, 2002 Saturn L300, 2002 Saturn L200, and 2002 Saturn L100. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: New compressors are shipped with 5 ounces of refrigerant oil and a nitrogen gas charge. When ready to install compressor, slowly remove high side cap retaining bolt to release gas.
CAUTION: Cap or tape open A/C hoses and A/C refrigerant components immediately to prevent A/C system contamination. Use only Polyalkylene Glycol Synthetic Refrigerant Oil (PAG) for internal circulation through the R-134a A/C system and only 525 viscosity mineral oil on fitting threads and "O" rings. If lubricants other than those specified are used, compressor failure and/or fitting seizure may result.
CAUTION: During oil removal procedure, condition of oil should be evaluated. Compressor oil never breaks down unless something is wrong with the compressor or A/C system. If the color of the oil is dark Brown or Black, or there is a presence of foreign substances in the oil, replace compressor and receiver-dehydrator. If the receiver-dehydrator is not replaced damage to A/C compressor will occur.
NOTE: Tools Required: ACR 2000 Air Conditioning Service Center (J-43600).
NOTE: When servicing the compressor, keep dirt and foreign material from getting on or into the compressor parts and system. Clean tools and clean work area are important for proper service. The compressor connections and the outside of the compressor should be cleaned before any ON CAR repairs, or before removal of the compressor. The parts must be kept clean at all times and any parts to be assembled should be cleaned with a non-petroleum based solvent and dried with air. Use only lint free cloths to wipe parts. Do not allow solvent to enter compressor or hoses.
