Pinpoint Test F: DTC C1446 - Brake Fluid Level Low/Brake Switch Circuit Failure

  1. F1 CHECK THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL 
    • Verify the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir is at the correct level.
    • Is the brake fluid level OK? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F2.
    2. NO  : ADJUST the fluid level as necessary. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
  2. F2 CHECK THE RED BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR OPERATION 
    • Monitor the red brake warning indicator in the instrument cluster.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Verify the red brake warning indicator illuminates for a few seconds and then extinguishes.
    • Does the red brake warning indicator illuminate for a few seconds and then extinguish? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F3.
    2. NO  : REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) AND WARNING CHIMES article to diagnose the red brake warning indicator.
  3. F3 CHECK THE STOPLAMP OPERATION 
    • Verify the stoplamp operate correctly while pressing and releasing the brake pedal.
    • Do the stoplamp operate correctly? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F4.
    2. NO  : REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING article to diagnose the stoplamp.
  4. F4 CHECK THE ABS MODULE FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Self Test ABS Module
    • Retrieve and record the ABS module DTCs.
    • Are any communication (U-code) DTCs present? 
    1. YES  : Go to the ABS Module DTC Chart and diagnose the U-code DTCs.
    2. NO  : Go to  F5.
  5. F5 CHECK THE PCM FOR DTCs 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Self Test PCM
    • Retrieve and record the PCM DTCs.
    • Are any DTCs present? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Master DTC Chart in MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article.
    2. NO  : Go to  F6.
  6. F6 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check the connectors for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
      • spread terminals.
    • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster module. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) AND WARNING CHIMES article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
