Engine Front Cover: Removal
CAUTION:
During engine repair procedures cleanliness is extremely important, any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable.
- Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
- Remove the cowl extension panel. Refer to PANEL - COWL TOP VENT .
- Disconnect the degas bottle hose.
- Remove the generator. Refer to GENERATOR .
- Remove the idler pulley.
- Unclip the A/C wiring harness from the generator bracket brace.
- Remove the bolts, generator bracket and the generator bracket brace as an assembly.
- Disconnect the oil pressure sender electrical connector.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the intake manifold runner control (IMRC) actuator electrical connector.
- Disconnect the camshaft position sensor and position the harness aside.
- Remove the power steering pump. Refer to PUMP - CIII .
- Disconnect the hoses from the water pump outlet tube.
- Remove the camshaft synchronizer. Refer to CAMSHAFT POSITION SYNCHRONIZER .
- Remove the power steering mounting bracket upper bolts.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley. Refer to CRANKSHAFT PULLEY .
- Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Refer to CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR .
- Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor (CMS) electrical connector.
- Remove the CMS mounting bracket.
- Remove the belt tensioner.
- Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket lower bolts and remove the bracket.
- Remove and discard the oil filter.
- Disconnect the radiator lower hose.
- Remove the engine mount nuts.
- Install the engine lifting eyes.
- Install the engine lifting equipment and raise the engine 127 mm (5.08 in).
- Remove the four bolts and the water pump pulley.
- Remove the water pump.
- Remove the five nuts.
- Remove the four bolts.
- Remove the water pump, lower tube and gasket as an assembly.
- Remove the water pump-mounting studs.
- Remove the engine front cover and the oil filter adapter as an assembly.
- Remove the timing chain and gears. Refer to TIMING CHAIN .
CAUTION:
The oil filter adapter hides the enging front cover lower left retainer. Failure to remove this retainer will result in damage to the engine front cover.
