Removal and Installation
- Remove the valve cover. Refer to VALVE COVER - RH and VALVE COVER - LH .
- Rotate the crankshaft until the piston for the valve being worked on is at the top of its stroke with both the intake valve and the exhaust valve closed.CAUTION: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same position. Mark the components for location.
- Remove the rocker arms.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the rocker arms.
- Hold the valve in the cylinder head.
- Remove the spark plug. Refer to SPARK PLUG .
- Apply a minimum of 689 kPa (100 psi) of compressed air to the cylinder.
- Using the special tool, compress the valve springs.
- Remove the following:
- Remove the valve spring retainer key.
- Remove the valve spring retainer.
- Remove the valve spring.
- Remove and discard the valve stem seal.
- Remove the valve spring seat.
- Inspect the components. Refer to ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten the bolts in two stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 5 N.m (44 lb-in).
- Stage 2: Tighten to 32 N.m (24 lb-ft.).
CAUTION:
If a valve drops into the cylinder, remove the cylinder head. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD .
NOTE:
Lubricate the parts with clean engine oil prior to assembly.
