Engine Front Cover: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  3. Remove both of the valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - LH  and VALVE COVER - RH .
  4. Remove the radiator. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  5. Remove the water pump. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  6. Remove the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL .
  7. Remove the top bolts and the lower bolt and position the power steering pump aside.

  8. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.

  9. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil.
  10. Remove the four front oil pan bolts.

  11. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.

  12. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt idler pulley.

  13. Remove the bolts.

  14. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

  15. Remove the engine front cover from the front cover-to-cylinder block dowel.
    • Remove the engine front cover gasket.
    • Clean the mating surfaces with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
    • Inspect the mating surfaces.
