Front Seat Backrest: Disassembly

    All Vehicles 

  1. Remove the head restraint.
  2. Remove the head restraint guides.
    • Using a suitable screwdriver, depress the locking tang.

  3. Remove the backrest lumbar support adjust lever (if equipped).
  4. 3-Door 

  5. Remove the backrest release lever.

  6. All Vehicles 

  7. Detach the backrest cover from the underside of the backrest.
    • Detach the retaining strip.

  8. Roll the backrest cover up the backrest to access the lower ends of the tensioning rods.

  9. Detach the lower ends of the tensioning rods from the backrest.

  10. Roll the backrest cover up the backrest to access the upper ends of the tensioning rods.
  11. Detach the upper ends of the tensioning rods from the backrest.

  12. Roll the backrest cover up the backrest to access the upper end of the spring frame.
  13. Detach the backrest cover from the spring frame.
    • Cut the hog rings.

  14. Vehicles With Side Air Bags 

    WARNING: Do not reuse the plastic retaining rivet. Always use the new rivet from the service kit. Failure to follow this warning could impair the air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.

  15. Remove the side air bag module deployment sleeve retainer.
    • Remove and discard the plastic retaining rivet.
  16. WARNING: Do not attempt to separate the plastic retaining strips in any other way than that detailed. Failure to follow this warning could impair the air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.

  17. Slide apart the plastic retaining strips securing the side air bag deployment sleeve.
  18. All Vehicles 

  19. Remove the backrest cover.
    • Detach the retaining strip.

  20. Remove the tensioning rods from the backrest cover if a new backrest cover is to be used.
  21. Remove the backrest pad and heater mat (if equipped).

  22. CAUTION: Make sure the exact position of the anti-squeak mat on the frame is noted.

  23. Remove the anti-squeak mat.
  24. Vehicles With Side Air Bags 

  25. Remove the side air bag module. For additional information, refer to SAFETY BELT SYSTEM or AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
