Valve Spring: Removal

- Remove the valve cover (6582). For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER LH and VALVE COVER RH .
- Rotate the crankshaft (6303) until the piston (6108) for the valve being worked on is at the top of its stroke with both the (A) intake valve (6507) and the (B) exhaust valve (6505) closed.
- Hold the valve in the cylinder head (6049).
- Remove the spark plug (12405), if necessary. For additional information, refer to SPARK PLUGS .
- Apply a minimum of 965 kPa (140 psi) of compressed air to the cylinder.
CAUTION: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same position. Mark the components for location.CAUTION: If a valve drops into the cylinder, remove the cylinder head. For additional information, refer to CYLINDER HEAD . - Remove the rocker arms (6564).
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the rocker arms.
- Using the special tool, compress the valve springs (6513).
- Remove the following:
- Remove the valve spring retainer key (6518).
- Remove the valve spring retainer (6514).
- Remove the valve spring.
- Remove and discard the valve stem seal (6571).
- Remove the valve spring seat.
- Secure the valve to keep it from dropping.
