Recommended Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Ensure fuel tank has fuel. Ensure fuel pump has power and ground. With ignition on, battery voltage should be present at fuel pump for about 20 seconds. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, perform TEST FK: FUEL PUMP MONITOR CONTROL (ECONOLINE, EXCURSION & F250-550) under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 7.3L DIESEL article.
  2. Remove fuel line from outlet side of fuel pump. Install fuel pressure adapter between fuel outlet line and electric fuel pump. Connect fuel pressure adapter to 0-160 psi (0-1103 kPa) gauge at engine pressure tester. See Fig 1.
  3. Start engine and allow it to idle. Check for leaks from line to gauge. Check fuel pressure with a full load on engine. DO NOT brake torque engine for more than 10 seconds. If fuel pressure is 45-80 psi (310-552 kPa) or more, fuel pressure is okay. Go to TEST 8D: ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP INLET RESTRICTION TEST . If fuel pressure is less than 45-80 psi (310-552 kPa), check fuel regulator valve for sticking or debris. See Fig 2. Repair as necessary and retest. If fuel regulator valve is okay, replace fuel pump. Retest to verify that there is not a restriction downstream of pump causing high fuel pressure, which will cause pump to fail again.
