Steering Column: Disassembly

NOTE: For shift interlock service information, refer to TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION COOLING EXTERNAL CONTROLS .
    WARNING: To avoid the risk of serious personal injury, follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the steering column removal procedure.
  1. Remove the steering column. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN .
  2. NOTE: To ease the removal of the spring, make sure that the column tilt assembly is in the upward position.

  3. Pull downward on the spring and release the spring tension, and route the spring above the spring hanger.
  4. Cut the spring retainer and remove the spring.

  5. Remove the nut.

  6. Remove the spring hanger, sleeve washer and spring.

  7. Remove the bolt and sleeve washer, and pivot the steering column mounting bracket upward.

  8. Remove the washer.

  9. Remove the bearing.

  10. Remove the tilt lever.

  11. CAUTION: Do not use a screwdriver to separate the clamp retainer or damage can result.

  12. Turn the column over and use a suitable punch to remove the steering column clamp retainer.
