Removal & Installation (2.3L)

  1. Release the fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Drain the fuel tank. With the vehicle in Neutral, position it on a hoist. Remove the fuel tank. See FUEL TANK . Press the quick release tab and disconnect the fuel tube. See FUEL LINE CONNECTORS  See Fig 1.
  2. NOTE: Make sure that the float, arm or flange are not damaged while removing the fuel pump module.
  3. Using a suitable fuel pump lock ring remover, rotate the lock ring counterclockwise and remove the fuel pump module. See Fig 2. Discard the locking ring and seal.
  4. Inspect the surfaces of the fuel pump module flange and fuel tank "O" ring contact surfaces. Do not polish or adjust the "O" ring contact area of the fuel pump flange or the fuel tank. Install a new fuel pump module or the fuel tank if the "O" ring contact area is bent, scratched or corroded. Make sure to install a new fuel pump module "O" ring and lock ring. Lubricate the fuel tube fittings with clean engine oil. Align the fuel tube fittings and press together until a click is heard and then pull on the fittings to make sure they are fully engaged. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  5. Perform evaporative emission system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSION LEAK CHECK MONITOR under DIAGNOSTIC MONITORS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article.
